The good with the bad

A week ago I was cleared to jog flat trails.... a-k-a smooth dirt and not "trails with any technical parts".  The PT session went well and that is in the write up in my previous post. All good news!

However... in the days after PT.. the squats, lunges... & all the stuff I struggled with in the past that I did well, made the knee sore for 2-3 days. With that I didn't do much of any PT and just backed way off. Jogged Monday(yesterday) 4 miles and it felt great. This is also the first weekend in 6 weeks that I haven't stood at a soccer tournament coaching all weekend standing for 6+ hours a day or worked security at the church for 4 hours prior to coaching. I only warmed up the keeper and relaxed the rest of the time.

Cleared to jog

PT work today. Big improvement from last week. Can actually do lunges now w/o sharp pain the ligaments outside the knee. Strength & flexibility work at the gym, elliptical for 20 mins, biking for 20 mins, leg presses and stretching seem to be helping a lot. 2-3 miles okay, alternating days. Asked that I be at 5 miles by July 10. Easy peasy!!!

Therapy

4 months until Cuyumaca 100k.
Back to walking, but the pain is less as well. 3 mile walk is it. Also keeping shoes on to help with outer ligament or IT band problem. Stretching helps. Always interesting when you see images on Physical Therapists page of yourself, and the comments that follow:

"cg_physicaltherapyandfitness - 1 week post op R. medial meniscectomy/mcl strain with PLC tear.
Recruiting core/hip/knee...looks easy, but not so easy after all. Hardest part will be keeping this 100 mile ultra-marathoner under control while knee heals. Fun to challenge him in ways he isn't used to!"

Whooops... maybe that is not a short jog

Physical Therapist(PT): Hi Mike... Hows the knee today?
Me: Ehhh hurts somewhat the last few days. Just aches a lot in general.
(PT): Like... after doing PT?
Me: A little, but sometimes during a few of the exercises.
(PT): Hmmmm.... ok we can go thru the ones that bother it and see where in the knee it hurts.
Me: But it doesn't hurt when jogging so that is good.
(PT): What do you mean when jogging?  <head turns to look at me>
Me: Well as we talked about last week, I started jogging slowly.
(PT) Ummm no. You aren't supposed to be jogging yet. I said walking was okay.
Me: You said I could walk, and then I said maybe jog, and you said as long as it is less than an hour.
(PT): No no no.... I meant it shouldn't hurt to jog a bit, but that doesn't mean you should start jogging again. I didn't want you walking around for hours at a time.
Me: hmmmmmm
(PT): Wait....  how long were you jogging?
Me: You said not more than an hour, so 45-55 mins or something like that just really slow.
(PT): Ohhh geez and how far?
Me: Depending on the day 3-5 miles.
(PT): OMG no no no! That is not a short jog. You cannot do that yet.  You are what... 5 maybe 6 weeks out of surgery?
Me: Ya...5 and a half. But it doesn't hurt to jog slowly.
(PT): Just hurts for days and days after huh? keeping you awake some at night too?
Me: Ya a little.
(PT): You clearly need to be monitored or you are gonna hurt yourself.

Perhaps ultra runners have a different view of what a 'short jog' is compared to the average person? Doesn't she know I have Cuyamaca 100k in 4 months!
